Graphing is something that we have done since elementary school. The facts about how to locate points remain the same. The information that is emphasized is about quadrants and what type of points we have in each quadrant.
To locate a point on a graph remember " you walk before you can climb"
Suppose we wanted to find where the point (2,5) should go on the coordinate plane. Notice that both the 2 and 5 are positive and that the 2 comes before the 5 in (2,5). Since you "walk before you can climb " you should walk two along the x axis the climb up 5 along the y axis.
Quadrants
Mathematicians like to categorize (group) things (including points) so that they can study patterns within those categories(groups). Points on the coordinate plane are grouped in quadrants. This system will be very useful to you when you learn abou sine, cosine, and tangent in high school. These quadrants are described using roman numerals. If you are not familiar with roman numerals I=1, II=2, III=3, and IV=4.
The quadrants took like this:
One thing that we can notice is that there is a pattern in how the ordered pairs appear:
In Quadrant1 the values on both of the x and y axes are positive.
In Quadrant 2 the values on the x axis are negative, while the values on the y axis are positive.
In Quadrant 3 the values on both of the x and y axes are negative.
In Quadrant 4 the values on the x axis are positive, while the values on the y axis are negative.
